SUMMARY:BiDS Big Data from Space 2025
DESCRIPTION:Big Data from Space 2025 (BiDS25)\, held from 29 September to 3 October 2025 in Riga\, is a biennial event co-organised by the European Space Agency (ESA)\, the European Commission\, and the EU Satellite Centre (SatCen). It brings together experts from academia\, industry\, and public institutions to explore how large-scale space data and technologies—such as AI and cloud computing—can address global challenges in science\, sustainability\, and security. \nThe programme includes satellite workshops (29–30 September)\, plenary sessions\, and a code sprint (1–3 October)\, providing a platform for innovation\, collaboration\, and knowledge exchange. \nBiDS25 aims to showcase the societal impact of Big Data from Space\, highlight emerging technologies\, promote open science and interoperability\, and explore future directions in digital infrastructure and responsible AI. \nThemes include policy transformation\, climate and security challenges\, data innovation across space domains\, digital governance\, cloud-native infrastructures\, and disruptive technologies. \nDestinE will be represented by Serco\, through the presentation “Bringing Earth’s Digital Twin to life: advancing the DestinE Platform for Big Data exploratin” on October 1st at 11:00\, as part of the session “Towards Digital Twins: Integrating Data\, Models\, and Insight”. \nDetails and Agenda can be found here

SUMMARY:AI for weather and climate preparedness: From European vision to real-world impact
DESCRIPTION:Europe is the fastest-warming continent in the world. The 2024 State of the Climate report revealed that tens of millions of Europeans have already faced severe impacts from extreme weather – in both cities and rural areas. Preparing for and adapting to climate change is not only urgent\, it is essential. \nArtificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies are now playing a central role in helping Europe tackle these challenges. The European Commission is advancing several flagship initiatives – including Destination Earth (DestinE)\, AI Factories\, EuroHPC and national programmes – to strengthen climate preparedness\, resilience and digital sovereignty. \nAgainst this backdrop\, ECMWF is hosting a high-level public conference in Brussels on 2 October 2025. The half-day event will highlight the latest advances in AI and explore its role in building Europe’s resilience to climate change and extreme weather events. \nWho should attend\nThe conference is particularly relevant for: \n\n\npolicymakers shaping digital strategy and climate adaptation; \n\n\nrepresentatives of European\, national and regional public institutions responsible for responding to climate impacts; \n\n\nresearchers advancing AI\, climate science and Earth system modelling; \n\n\nindustry representatives developing climate technology solutions; \n\n\ntechnology innovators applying AI for environmental benefit. \n\n\nProgramme (preliminary)\n14.00 Welcome and introduction \n14.05 Orientation video: What is Destination Earth? \n14.10 Opening remarks: Europe’s digital and AI strategy for resilience \n\n\nGrazyna Piesiewicz\, Head of Unit\, DG CNECT\, European Commission \n\n\n14.20 Building Europe’s AI ecosystem for real-world impact – Panel discussion \n\n\nAnna Dimitrijevics\, Deputy head of unit adaptation and resilience to climate change\, DG CNECT/DG CLIMA \n\n\nCristian Canton\, Associate Director\, Barcelona Supercomputing Centre \n\n\nPetteri Taalas\, Director-General\, Finnish Meteorological Institute \n\n\nMonique Kuglitsch\, Innovation Manager\, Fraunhofer HHI \n\n\nModerated by Simon Pickard\, Network Director\, Science|Business \n\n\n15.00 Spotlight: AI in action for weather\, climate and modelling – Panel discussion \n\n\nSara Hahner\, Scientist for Machine Learning\, ECMWF \n\n\nEva Prieto\, Climate Change Specialist\, Predictia \n\n\nLene Østvand\, Researcher\, MET Norway \n\n\nChaired by Marianne Thyrring\, Director-General\, Danish Meteorological Institute \n\n\n15.30 Coffee break \n16.00 From ideas to implementation: maturing Europe’s AI capability – Panel discussion \n\n\nIrina Sandu\, Director\, Destination Earth\, ECMWF \n\n\nMaarten van Aalst\, Director-General\, Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute \n\n\nAna Oliveira\, Chief Technology Officer\, +Atlantic \n\nErwan Marteil\, Head of Unit Prevention and Preparedness Capacity Building\, EU DG ECHO \nModerated by Simon Pickard\, Network Director\, Science|Business\n\n16.45 Closing reflections: coordinating for European leadership – Fireside chat \n\n\nGrazyna Piesiewicz\, Head of Unit\, DG CNECT\, European Commission \n\n\nFlorian Pappenberger\, Director-General Elect and Director\, Forecasts and Services\, ECMWF \n\n\nJørn Kristiansen\, Director\, Development Centre for Weather Forecasting\, MET Norway \n\n\nModerated by Simon Pickard\, Network Director\, Science|Business \n\n\n17.15 Networking reception \nMore information and Registration

SUMMARY:2025 EUMETSAT Climate Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The EUMETSAT Climate Symposium\, From Space to Climate Service: Co-creation in Action\, will take place in 2025 and focuses on strengthening collaboration between policy and decision makers\, operational climate service providers at national and European levels\, the research community\, and EUMETSAT itself. \nThe event aims to unlock the full potential of satellite climate data to benefit society using the latest technology. The symposium will centre on Europe\, addressing the opportunities and challenges faced by its citizens. \nThis event is designed for policy and decision makers at all administrative levels\, developers working with satellite climate data workflows\, providers of operational climate data and services\, their users\, and experts in cloud computing technologies that support co-creation. Through keynote talks and discussions\, the symposium will facilitate connections and networking between these communities\, promoting partnerships and collaborative action. \nThe 2025 EUMETSAT Climate Symposium will provide a platform to update your understanding of global climate policy and its impacts\, express your needs and expectations towards climate data providers\, network with climate data providers\, climate information service providers\, and decision makers\, and gain an overview of available geospatial climate information and related services\, including Copernicus services. \nThe outcomes of the symposium will help shape the design and provision of satellite-based climate data products\, the support and services offered to users of these products\, and the design of upcoming space-based Earth observation systems. \nSessions will focus on climate policy and socio-economic benefits of climate data\, usage of satellite climate products in applications and their future design\, interaction between research and operations in joint application development\, and the co-evolution of data access and utilisation. \nFrom the DestinE initiative’s perspective\, a presentation on cloud services supporting climate action is planned\, although the details are still being finalised. More information about DestinE’s role in the event will be shared soon. \nWe invite you to engage in constructive discussions\, share your insights and visions\, and help shape the future of climate services. \nMore information and Registration
