SUMMARY:ESA Digital Twin Earth Components: Open Science Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The ESA Digital Twin Earth Components: Open Science Meeting will take place at ESA ESRIN\, between 2 and 4 February 2026. \nThere is an undeniable urgency to act on the unprecedented ‘triple crisis’ of climate change\, biodiversity loss and pollution. Addressing these challenges calls for more advanced and integrated ways to observe\, model\, and forecast Earth’s systems – and digital twins have become a central part of this evolution. \nWithin this landscape\, the ESA Digital Twin Earth (DTE) programme focuses on strengthening the role of Earth observation data and satellite capabilities in the development of digital twin ecosystems. \nThis upcoming meeting will serve as a networking opportunity and invitation for scientists\, research organisations\, policymakers\, innovators and digital twin projects. Attendees will share their thoughts and help shape the future use of Earth observation in digital twins across Europe. \nThe developers of the Destination Earth (DestinE) Platform will also take part in the event. They will host a presentation on innovation and collaboration and a session on how service providers can onboard their services onto the DestinE Platform. \nFor event and registration details\, visit: ESA Digital Twin Earth Components: Open Science Meeting

SUMMARY:TerraDT Workshop: Urban Impact Models for Climate Adaptation
DESCRIPTION:TerraDT is organising an Urban Impact Model Workshop in Barcelona this February\, bringing together public and private stakeholders working at the intersection of cities\, climate adaptation and decision-making. \nThe workshop will showcase how TerraDT’s urban impact models translate high-resolution climate and environmental data into actionable insights for cities. Participants will explore use cases relevant to urban planning and climate adaptation policies with a focus on heat stress\, air quality\, extreme events\, and their impacts on people\, infrastructure\, and assets. The event will also host experts from our sister project UrbanAIR\, the digital twin for urban climate action. \nWho should attend? \nDesigned for city and urban planners\, local and national authorities\, weather and health services and environmental agencies but also for real estate investors and insurance companies\, the event will offer a space to engage directly with scientists and model developers. Through targeted presentations and interactive discussions\, attendees will gain a clearer understanding of how digital twins can support evidence-based policies\, resilient urban development\, and informed strategies for more resilient cities.\nThe workshop also aims to gather feedback from practitioners\, ensuring that TerraDT’s urban impact models respond to real-world needs and decision contexts. Participants will leave with practical insights into how advanced climate modelling can be integrated into planning\, risk management\, and long-term urban strategies. \nFor the Destination Earth community\, the TerraDT Urban Impact Model Workshop is a concrete opportunity to see how DestinE-aligned\, high-resolution climate data can be translated into decision-ready intelligence at city scale. The workshop focuses on urban impact models that connect climate hazards—such as heat stress\, air quality and extreme events—with tangible impacts on people\, infrastructure and assets\, directly supporting DestinE’s ambition to move from system-level simulations to actionable use cases.\nBy bringing together scientists\, model developers and end-users\, TerraDT offers a practical space to discuss integration\, usability and feedback loops that are essential for strengthening DestinE’s downstream applications in climate adaptation and urban resilience. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:5th ECMWF-ESA Machine Learning Workshop
DESCRIPTION:ECMWF and ESA are organising the fifth workshop on Machine Learning for Earth Observation and Prediction\, which will be held from 13-17 April 2026 in Bologna\, Italy. \nMachine Learning (ML) is increasingly being used to observe and predict how the Earth system behaves. The scale\, complexity and sophistication of these ML technologies have also increased considerably over the last few years. \nThe in-person meeting will provide an up-to-date snapshot of the state of the art in this rapidly evolving field. It will also be a forum of discussion and interaction among scientists and practitioners about the current opportunities and challenges presented by the use of ML technologies for Earth system observation and prediction. \nThe workshop will discuss hybrid ML-physics based systems and end-to-end ML approaches for data assimilation and weather and climate prediction. It will explore new ways to apply ML to Earth system observations and examine how high performance and emerging computing technologies can accelerate these applications. Participants will also look at the role of ML in building digital twins of the Earth system and share strategies to make these models more accurate and efficient. \nRegistration for in person participation closes on 31 January. For submission details or to register for the event\, please visit the official website here: \n\nVisit event website

DESCRIPTION:The EGU (European Geosciences Union) General Assembly 2026 will take place from 3-8 May 2026 in Vienna\, bringing together the international Earth\, climate and environmental science community to showcase cutting-edge research and innovations supporting a deeper understanding of the Earth system and improved risk management. \nIn this context\, Destination Earth (DestinE) will feature prominently through two dedicated sessions on Earth system Digital Twins\, highlighting how these technologies are transforming Earth system modelling\, climate impact assessment and decision support. \nDestinE will contribute to the following sessions: \n\nApplications of Earth system digital twins\n\nConvener: Claudia Vitolo (European Space Agency) | Co-conveners: Joern Hoffmann (European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast)\, Franka Kunz (European Space Agency)\, Danaele Puechmaille (European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites). \nThis session focuses on the applications of Earth system digital twins developed under the European Commission’s Destination Earth initiative\, a multi-year pogramme implemented by ECMWF\, ESA and EUMETSAT. \nDestinE combines advanced Earth observations\, high-resolution modelling\, Artificial Intelligence and high-performance computing to simulate natural phenomena\, hazards and human activities\, delivering actionable insights for climate adaptation\, disaster risk reduction and sustainable development. Contributions will explore stakeholder-driven applications ranging from extreme event prediction to long-term climate adaptation\, urban liveability\, and marine and hydrological systems\, strengthening Europe’s digital twin ecosystem and its global relevance. Submit your abstract here. \n\nLeveraging Digital Twins for Earth: Advancing Predictive Models and Scenario Analysis\n\nConvener: Bertrand Le Saux (European Commission) | Co-conveners: Monique Kuglitsch (Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institut)\, Vitus Benson (Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry)\, Lorenzo Nava (University of Cambridge)\, Elena Xoplaki (CMCC Foundation – Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change). \nThis session examines how Digital Twins for Earth\, such as Destination Earth\, enhance hazard prediction\, scenario analysis and anticipatory risk management. \nBy integrating predictive models\, real-time observations and AI-driven tools\, digital twins enable “what-if” analyses\, hazard cascade simulations\, synthetic data generation and testing of adaptation strategies across multiple sectors\, including energy and food systems. \nThe session fosters cross-disciplinary dialogue on how the convergence of digital twins and AI can accelerate resilience and preparedness for climate-related risks and natural hazards. Submit your abstract here. \nThrough its participation in EGU General Assembly 2026\, Destination Earth reaffirms its role as a key European initiative advancing next-generation digital capabilities to support climate policy\, risk management and sustainable development at European and global scale. \nVisit the website
