SUMMARY:Destination Earth Information Day
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: this is based on an event page that was originally published 9 May 2023 on the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ website.  \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Destination Earth (DestinE) Information Day was held on 28 February 2022 to provide a high-level overview of the intended activities and procurements related to DestinE\, and offered the opportunity for interested parties to ask questions.  \nAs part of their respective tasks under Destination Earth\, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF)\, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) intend to procure scientific and technical capabilities and solutions to deliver the first phase of DestinE. The procurements will be published in the form of Invitations to Tender (ITTs).   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMake sure you don’t miss important DestinE updates. SUMMARY:Science and Technology Seminar: How the EC's DestinE programme transforms environmental policy making: National and collaborative perspectives
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: this is based on an event page that was originally published on the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ website.  \n\n\n\n\n\nOn 11 May 2021\, ECMWF ran a seminar titled “How the EC’s DestinE programme transforms environmental policy making: National and collaborative perspectives”.  \nThis ECMWF Science and Technology Seminar is the last out of a series of three Destination Earth (DestinE) related sessions. This third talk focused on how such European actions can support and enhance national activities. Within this series there are a set of talks that focus on the development of digital twins in the context of the Destination Earth initiative.  \nJørn Kristiansen from Met Norway spoke of the need for National Meteorological and Hydrological Services to constantly identify new areas of investigation and new directions for interdisciplinary and joint research\, including mathematical tools and computing science\, making more of existing and emerging observations through modelling and data assimilation among areas covered.  \nFrancisco Doblas-Reyes from the Barcelona Computing Centre looked at the way a scientific community can benefit from Destination Earth\, in areas such as the need for computationally efficient models to run many hindcasts with large ensembles\, and the challenges of managing such workflows and data.  \nThe European Union (EU) plans to be climate neutral by 2050. For its green transition\, the EU plans to fund the development of digital twins of the Earth. For these twins to be more than big data atlases\, they must create a qualitatively new Earth system simulation and observation capability using a methodological framework responsible for exceptional advances in numerical weather prediction.  \n\n\n\n\n\nMake sure you don’t miss important DestinE updates. SUMMARY:Science and Technology Seminar: How the EC's DestinE programme transforms environmental policy making – ESA's and EUMETSAT’s perspectives
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: this is based on an event page that was originally published on the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ website.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn 8 April 2021\, ECMWF ran a seminar titled “How the EC’s DestinE programme transforms environmental policy making – ESA’s and EUMETSAT’s perspectives”.  \nThis seminar is part of the ECMWF’s Science and Technology Seminar Series. Within this series are a set of talks that focus on the development of digital twins in the context of the Destination Earth initiative. Following the previous seminar in the series\, this seminar features representatives from ESA and EUMETSAT which provided an overview of their components of DestinE; the Core Platform and the Data Lake\, respectively. Under the European Commission’s leadership\, and in coordination with the Member States\, scientific communities and other stakeholders\, three entrusted entities will implement the core platform and the first two digital twins: ECMWF\, EUMETSAT and ESA.  \n\n\n\n\n\nMake sure you don’t miss important DestinE updates. SUMMARY:Science and Technology Seminar: How the EC's DestinE programme transforms environmental policy making - Digital twins as a step-change for Earth-system modelling and data assimilation
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: this is based on an event page that was originally published on the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts‘ website.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn 5 March 2021\, ECMWF ran a seminar titled “How the EC’s DestinE programme transforms environmental policy making – Digital twins as a step-change for Earth-system modelling and data assimilation”.   \nThis seminar is part of ECMWF’s Science and Technology Seminar Series with talks that focus on the development of digital twins. In this first talk in that set\, Peter Bauer provided an overview of the European Commission’s Destination Earth (DestinE) programme\, showing the motivation\, context\, high-level architecture\, and scientific and programmatic aspects.   \nNils Wedi then presented the recent results of 1km global simulations achieved on the Summit system\, using the ECMWF Integrated Forecasting System (IFS). He described how such simulations could contribute to a Digital Twin prototype. Developing next-generation models to produce high-resolution digital twins of the Earth is an area of focus in ECMWF’s Strategy 2021-30.  \n\n\n\n\n\nMake sure you don’t miss important DestinE updates. SUMMARY:ESA Φ-week 2020
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: this is based on a post-event report that was originally published 28 September 2020 on the European Space Agency’s website.  \n\n\n\nIn 2020\, ESA’s EO Φ-week event\, held on 28 September – 2 October 2020 online focused on Digital Twin Earth—a dynamic\, digital replica of our planet using Earth observation data and AI. \nThe Digital Twin Earth concept\, which now evolved to embrace both the EU-funded Destination Earth initiative and the ESA-funded DTE programme\, was presented and aims to accurately represent Earth’s changes\, monitor natural and human activity\, and support sustainable development. The event highlighted the successful launch of Φ-sat-1\, the first European Earth observation mission with onboard AI\, which efficiently filtered data and reduced downlink costs. \nDuring Φ-week\, speakers emphasized the importance of addressing climate change and how Earth observation satellites\, like those in the Copernicus program\, play a crucial role in monitoring and solving environmental challenges. The event also announced an exciting ESA initiative in collaboration with CERN\, the “EOP AI-enhanced Quantum Initiative for EO – QC4EO\,” exploring the potential of quantum computing and AI in solving complex Earth observation problems and supporting programs like Digital Twin Earth and Copernicus. This collaboration holds promising implications for advancing Earth observation capabilities and environmental management. \n\n\n\nMake sure you don’t miss important DestinE updates.
