It aims to replicate the Earth’s complex ecosystem\, allowing us to estimate our planet’s response to changes under both the current climate state and future climate projections. A DTE is an emerging concept that is capable of simulating what-if scenarios before they occur\, which is crucial for natural hazard mitigation and adaptation plans (e.g.\, floods\, heatwaves\, wildfires\, droughts\, etc.). A DTE calls for an advanced\, federated\, multi-computing architecture that works across organizations and agency boundaries. For a DTE to be successful\, it needs to be open source and developed for and by the community. It needs to be an extendable framework that encourages continuous contributions\, integration\, and development of advanced AI solutions in order to have an accurate digital representation of the physical environment. This session welcomes presentations on current open-source frameworks and enabling technologies for DTE including\, but not restricted to: \n\n\n\n\nOpen-source DTE framework\n\n\n\nComputer infrastructure to move virtual data from DTE repositories to service platforms\n\n\n\nSurrogate models for missing observations and unresolved physical processes\n\n\n\nHybrid AI / physics-based modelling\n\n\n\nExtreme value predictions\n\n\n\nUncertainty quantification and representation\n\n\n\nPost-processing (event detection and downscaling/super-resolution)\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n14.00–14.05: 5-minute convener introduction \n\n\n\n14.05–14.15: Towards a Digital Twin of the Carbon Cycle in Europe \n\n\n\n14.15–14.25: Open-Source Framework For Earth System Digital Twins Applied to Surface Water Hydrology \n\n\n\n14.25–14.35: Towards a local\, dated and thematic digital twins factory \n\n\n\n14.35–14.45: Earth System Deep Learning towards a Global Digital Twin of Wildfires \n\n\n\n14.45–14.55: Deep Learning for Verification of Earth’s surfaces \n\n\n\n14.55–15.05: Foundation AI Models for Science \n\n\n\n15.05–15.15: Statistical downscaling of precipitation with deep neural networks \n\n\n\n15.15–15.25: Confidence estimation of DNN predictions for on-board applications \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nSee the full session information and individual presentation details in the main session page. \n\n\n\n\nLearn more\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:1st Destination Earth User eXchange
DESCRIPTION:This free-to-attend event was hosted virtually and in person on 15 February 2023 in Frascati\, Rome\, Italy. \nPlease click here for the report of the event. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nWhat is the first Destination Earth User eXchange?\n\n\n\nThis was the first of a series of regular events to establish\, grow and nurture a community of Destination Earth (DestinE) stakeholders. \n\n\n\nDestinE partners have decided to establish such events to inform the community on the progress in implementing DestinE and\, at the same time\, identifying stakeholders or prospective partners and understand the needs of the community so that the initiative can develop in synergy with its (potential) users. The User eXchange also aims at identifying prospective partners and understand stakeholder expectations and possible avenues for interaction. \n\n\n\nWhat is Destination Earth?\n\n\n\nThe Directorate-General for Communications Networks\, Content and Technology (DG-CNECT) of the European Commission has entrusted the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF)\, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) with the implementation of the DestinE initiative. \n\n\n\nDestinE aims to develop – on a global scale – a highly accurate digital model of the Earth to monitor and predict the interaction between natural phenomena and human activities. As part of the European Commission’s Green Deal and Digital Strategy\, DestinE will contribute to achieving the objectives of the twin transition\, green and digital. \n\n\n\nA broad stakeholder engagement is key to the success of the DestinE initiative and the three entities have been cooperating closely in developing a joint strategy towards user engagement and partnerships. This strategy includes setting up an open stakeholder dialogue aimed at the wider community ensuring engagement of all relevant players. The DestinE User eXchange is intended to become a central building block of this dialogue.

SUMMARY:Science and Technology Seminar: How the EC's DestinE programme transforms environmental policy making: National and collaborative perspectives
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: this is based on an event page that was originally published on the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ website.  \n\n\n\n\n\nOn 11 May 2021\, ECMWF ran a seminar titled “How the EC’s DestinE programme transforms environmental policy making: National and collaborative perspectives”.  \nThis ECMWF Science and Technology Seminar is the last out of a series of three Destination Earth (DestinE) related sessions. This third talk focused on how such European actions can support and enhance national activities. Within this series there are a set of talks that focus on the development of digital twins in the context of the Destination Earth initiative.  \nJørn Kristiansen from Met Norway spoke of the need for National Meteorological and Hydrological Services to constantly identify new areas of investigation and new directions for interdisciplinary and joint research\, including mathematical tools and computing science\, making more of existing and emerging observations through modelling and data assimilation among areas covered.  \nFrancisco Doblas-Reyes from the Barcelona Computing Centre looked at the way a scientific community can benefit from Destination Earth\, in areas such as the need for computationally efficient models to run many hindcasts with large ensembles\, and the challenges of managing such workflows and data.  \nThe European Union (EU) plans to be climate neutral by 2050. For its green transition\, the EU plans to fund the development of digital twins of the Earth. For these twins to be more than big data atlases\, they must create a qualitatively new Earth system simulation and observation capability using a methodological framework responsible for exceptional advances in numerical weather prediction.  \n\n\n\n\n\nMake sure you don’t miss important DestinE updates. SUMMARY:Science and Technology Seminar: How the EC's DestinE programme transforms environmental policy making - Digital twins as a step-change for Earth-system modelling and data assimilation
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: this is based on an event page that was originally published on the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts‘ website.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn 5 March 2021\, ECMWF ran a seminar titled “How the EC’s DestinE programme transforms environmental policy making – Digital twins as a step-change for Earth-system modelling and data assimilation”.   \nThis seminar is part of ECMWF’s Science and Technology Seminar Series with talks that focus on the development of digital twins. In this first talk in that set\, Peter Bauer provided an overview of the European Commission’s Destination Earth (DestinE) programme\, showing the motivation\, context\, high-level architecture\, and scientific and programmatic aspects.   \nNils Wedi then presented the recent results of 1km global simulations achieved on the Summit system\, using the ECMWF Integrated Forecasting System (IFS). He described how such simulations could contribute to a Digital Twin prototype. Developing next-generation models to produce high-resolution digital twins of the Earth is an area of focus in ECMWF’s Strategy 2021-30.  \n\n\n\n\n\nMake sure you don’t miss important DestinE updates.
