NOTE: this is based on an article that was originally published on the International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium’s website.

The International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, the flagship conference of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS), took place in Pasadena, California 16-21 July 2023.

The event aimed to provide a platform for sharing knowledge and experience on recent developments and advancements in geoscience and remote sensing technologies, particularly in the context of earth observation, disaster monitoring and risk assessment. The symposium’s Technology, Industry and Education (TIE) section hosted a Town Hall meeting on the topic of Digital Twins for Earth Science.

The town hall, featuring Claudia Vitolo from ESA, as well as speakers from NASA, CNES, and Sentinel Hub, provided an overview of ongoing Digital Twin projects, as well as showcasing use cases for their functionalities. The presentations were then used as a starting point for an engaging discussion on the opportunities and advantages posed by digital twins for Earth Science and observation.

The International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium provided an engaging platform for the discussion of current and future scientific developments for science and technology, more specifically on the value that Digital Twins will bring to existing observation methods.
