Webinar: Modelling as a tool to understand wildfire risk and risk reduction potential

November 13 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm CET

timelapse 2 minutes

The webinar addresses wildfire models used to evaluate fire risk in a changing climate. Fire spread modelling can be used to assess efficacy and efficiency of wildfire prevention solutions (e.g. fire breaks and fuel management) in current and future climates.

Webinar participants will be provided with an opportunity to learn about the Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin (Climate DT) and related resources. Developers of wildfire model applications share information about recent progress and showcase examples of usage. Current and prospective users of Climate DT and the wildfire model’s results will be surveyed to identify expectations and requirements.

Programme (the presentations include 5 min for Q/A):

13:00 Opening – Heikki Tuomenvirta (Finnish Meteorological Institute)
13:10 The Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin modelling system and the Fire Weather Index (FWI) – Suraj Polade (Finnish Meteorological Institute)
13:35 Wildfire spread modelling to estimate efficiency of the fire risk reduction solutions – Luiz Galizia (AXA Climate)
14:00 The WISE fire spread model application – Joonas Kolstela (Finnish Meteorological Institute)
14:25 A web-GIS tool to support forest fire risk management at pan-European scale – Erico Kutchartt (Forest Sciences Centre of Catalonia)
14:50 Wrap-up

The event will be of particular relevance and benefit to the following groups:

Disaster risk management and reduction experts, climate change adaptation community, actuaries and risk analysts from insurance sector

The webinar is organized by the Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin (Climate DT) consortium in collaboration with the HEU PIISA project.

HEU PIISA (Piloting Innovative Insurance Solutions for Adaptation) is a Horizon Europe funded project working to reduce the climate change adaptation gap (i.e. the difference between the recognized need for adaptation and the actually implemented adaptation) by developing and piloting new insurance and risk-sharing concepts.
