High-voltage transmission line capacity is strongly influenced by weather conditions such as temperature, wind, and solar radiation. Traditionally, operators rely on Static Line Rating, which often leaves a significant portion of the grid underutilized. Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) leverages real-time weather data to determine the actual capacity of transmission lines.

The Belgian Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI), Elia, PropheSea, and GeoSphere Austria are currently developing a next-generation pilot service for Dynamic Line Rating, as part of ECMWF’s Destination Earth initiative. Their objective is to introduce an advanced level of granularity in weather forecasting, combining on-demand weather forecasts with DLR technology. As such, they strive to optimize the use of existing grid infrastructure, potentially reducing costly investments such as deploying additional sensors on overhead lines and reinforcing the grid, by maximizing the lines’ rated capacity.

In this session, they will:

  • Explain the fundamentals of DLR – Understand why DLR matters, its advantages, and its contribution to the energy transition.
  • Share insights on their methodology – Discover how high-resolution, on-demand weather forecasts are combined with DLR technology in this pilot service.
  • Present preliminary results – Get a first look at their findings and learn about the project’s objectives.
  • Engage in a Q&A session – Discuss your questions, provide feedback, and explore how the pilot service could benefit your operations.

Register now to join the webinar on Friday, 10 October 2025, from 13:00 – 14:00 (CET).
