NOTE: This is an excerpt of an explainer article that was originally published on the ECMWF website .

What is the role of artificial intelligence in DestinE?  How does it contribute to enhance the DestinE system and help unlock the new generation of AI solutions for weather and climate?

The new explainer article published by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) provides an in-depth description of the wide and diverse range of Artificial Intelligence (AI) activities undertaken by ECMWF and its partner organisations as part of the EU Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative led by the European Commission’ DG CNECT.

The EU Commission defined the intensification of the use of AI/ ML as one of the strategic objectives of Phase II of DestinE, and ECMWF is leading several of these projects.

These activities engage all areas of the DestinE system, involving infrastructure, software and model developments, making the most of the recent breakthrough of AI and machine learning (ML) in weather and climate.

More specifically, they include the development of machine learning-based Earth system model components to advance towards an AI-driven Earth system model, by harnessing the power of EuroHPC supercomputers and the digital twins data; and also expanding the software solutions of the Digital Twin engine to support training and running the new generation of AI models.

Overall, these activities will support the quantification of uncertainties for DestinE’s digital twins’ simulations, and will enhance the interactive features of the system, while contributing to enhance disaster resilience, supporting climate adaptation and developing next generation of AI solutions in Europe.
