Under the Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative of the European Commission (DG CNECT), three free online courses on Machine Learning (ML) for Earth systems modelling are being developed and offered in 2026. Registration for Course 1 “Foundations and New Frontiers” is still open.

Designed as a self-paced, 10-hour module, this first course is tailored for a broad audience, from policy-makers and high-level decision-makers to technical professionals and meteorologists looking to transition into the world of AI. Participants will explore:

  • Conceptual Foundations: An overview of key concepts in AI and ML,  and how ML complements traditional physics-based models within the DestinE ecosystem.
  • Next-Gen Architectures: An introduction to the technologies reshaping the field, including ECMWF’s Artificial Intelligence integrated Forecasting System (AIFS) and hybrid modelling approaches.
  • Responsible AI: Dedicated modules on the ethical, regulatory, and societal implications of deploying AI in Earth system sciences.
  • Interactive Learning: The curriculum combines high-quality video lectures with quizzes and reading material for in depth learning, complemented by interactive live events, moderated forum discussions, and weekly emails to support learner engagement.,

This is just the beginning; Course 1 sets the stage for more technical, hands-on modules (Courses 2 and 3) arriving later in 2026, which will focus on deep learning architectures like Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) and Transformers for operational forecasting.

This course series is developed by ECMWF in collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Wageningen University, supported by a network of European scientists.
