The value of digital twins for climate change adaptation discussed at COP29

Destination Earth’s Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin (Climate DT) featured on Saturday 16 November at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. It was the second time that the ambitious initiative, led by the European Commission’s DG CNECT, was present at a Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. A panel moderated by CSC – IT Center for Science explored the value of global and local digital twins in support of climate change adaptation. Furthermore, European Commission CNECT.C1 Head of Unit Grazyna Piesiewicz, in charge of Destination Earth, was invited to participate in the OECD panel “Towards a green and digital future”.

ECMWF Destination Earth Director Irina Sandu participated in the panel discussion and presented the efforts to develop two digital twins along with partner institutions from across Europe. The first, the Climate DT, is a novel operational capability for multi-decadal projections at km scale, while the Extremes DT deals with weather-induced extremes.
