Challenge

The Danube Delta, one of Europe’s most biodiverse regions, is undergoing significant hydrological changes, impacting its unique ecosystem. This intricate network of lakes, marshes, and wetlands is crucial for regional biodiversity, supporting numerous species of birds, fish, and other wildlife. However, environmental pressures such as climate change, pollution, and human activities are altering the hydrological dynamics of the Delta’s lakes, necessitating a comprehensive and precise analysis to inform conservation and management efforts.

DestinE Data Lake offers an innovative solution to this challenge, leveraging edge services like Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) with the ISLET services, processing services as STACK and HOOK, and data access capabilities with the Harmonized Data Access. By utilizing DestinE Data Lake powerful infrastructure, researchers can deploy sophisticated hydrological models and simulations without the constraints of local computing resources. Additionally, the project’s extensive data access provides access to historical and real-time hydrological data, enabling a thorough analysis of lake conditions in the Danube Delta.

DestinE Solution

The architecture of the solution is based on the DestinE Data Lake’s services, complemented with an integration with the European Weather Cloud, and integrating existing algorithm designed and implemented by an industrial company and a national agency (CS and CNES). The architecture maximises the added values of the edge processing capabilities of DestinE Data Lake, the processing Digital Twins outputs from ECMWF on LUMI Bridge and the Earth O

bservation Data on DEDL Central site where they are colocalised. The architecture of the use case leverages the geo distributed services of DestinE, DANUBEHIS Station, the European Weather Cloud and Federated Data Providers, illustrating the distribution and integration of all those system around Destination Earth Data Lake.

The outputs of the various processing as well as some of the data retrieved from the various sources are made available through a Dashboard dynamically configurable providing decision makers and stakeholders with understandable presentation of the data. The level of consolidation of the data can be different for different users according to their level of knowledge in the domain or their topic of interest (water management, agriculture, fire hazard management, policy maker…).

Impact

The Danube Delta Water reservoir monitoring use case focuses on the detailed assessment of the Delta’s lake hydrology, aiming to identify patterns, predict future changes, and recommend sustainable management practices. By integrating DestinE Data Lake cutting-edge technology and data services, this initiative seeks to enhance our understanding of the Delta’s hydrological dynamics, ultimately contributing to the preservation of this vital ecosystem.

The use case also demonstrates the ability for end users to propose in DestinE environment end to end solutions, from raw data distributed processing to an added value dashboard for decision maker, enabling both scientific excellence and impact for decision makers.
